Live happily, with wisdom, and be useful

做一個快樂的、有智慧、有用的人

Live happily, with wisdom, and be
useful

I used
to say that there is no immortality in this world.  But this idea
came from my own failure to be successful even in my ridiculously
tiny career.  To face the reality, there are
many
successful, great people, who have done far far better than we
have ever done, and gone to a far far higher places than we could ever
reach.   And, there is immortality, i.e. the fame of a
person lasting as long as the human race exists. Aristotle, Hippocrates,
Alexander the Great, Washington, Einstein, Pasteur, Koch, Ehrlich, Watson, C
rick,
Roosevelt, Reagan, etc, etc, there are those who made major changes
in our history, whether it was in science or politics.  Scientific
achievement seems harder and harder to attain
a historically revolutionary level alone these days.  One major
accomplishment is always built on contributions by many others.

In
politics, good presidents of the USA may be remembered for
decades to come.  He will be many heads above all others of the
same era.  When walking in the hallways of congressional
buildings in D.C. for the FAPA activity,  I could see how
important it is in being a politician in America.  No
wonder there are so many people trying to go into politics or law in the
US.

However,
if you look at the mass of humanity in the world, reaching the
top in politics or science, seems like hitting a jackpot.  Mere personal effort is most frequently not enough.  There are many
pieces that have to fit in our favor.
Inherit high IQ, cultivate good EQ, BQ, born to the right family, enough wealth (for politicians or for
scientists
alike), and still, you need to be at the right place at
the right time.  (I do not think this is my "sour grape
mentality". )

Human
being is born with the instincts of trying to be the best (be
competitive), trying to be immortal, and trying to search for "the truth,
the goodness and the beauty" (veritas, bonitas, pulchritudo, in Latin--to
show the authenticity of this millenia-old concept).  We always try to
find the courage to
seek the truth, to do good to others, and
struggle to create beauty.  Most of us have not achieved.  But we
were taught to do our best since early childhood.
  So we did.

Looking
at the narrow path of my life from a different angle, what
a journey I have gone through.  So turbulent, so colorful, so
beautiful, like a rainbow, like the sky before the sunset!

Regardless
of what is ahead, I teach my offspring to do
their best to "live happily, with wisdom, and be useful" to the
others in our circle.

No matter what line of life you choose, be a happy, wise, and useful person.
